When the concept for this program was developed back in 2007, two VPRO programs were an important inspiration to us. The first one was the Post… series by Dutch documentary film maker and journalist Emile Fallaux. In the eighties he lived in the US, Irkoetsk and Nicaragua for periods of six months and reported ‘from inside’ about the daily life in his surroundings. The Post Irkoetst-series is available online (with Dutch subs). The other series is Veldpost, in which 5 camera crews reported weekly from five different rundown neigborhoods around The Netherlands and Europe. Both series unveiled an unprecedented inside view on the daily life of cultures around the world. The greatest achievement of both series was that they succeeded in making compelling tv out of ‘ordinary life’. This week the former chief editor of Veldpost, the famous Dutch filmmaker Mr. Frans Bromet was asked about his favorite TV show these days. And we are delighted to say that he mentioned..Metropolis! Quite an honour for all of us here in Hilversum, and a big compliment to all our local correspondents around the globe.
